Drivers on Custer Parkway near Canyon Creek Drive will find northbound and southbound traffic sharing one side of the road starting Monday, Oct. 19.

In a notice posted Oct. 13, the City of Richardson said both directions would be moved to the southbound side of Custer Parkway between Clear Lake Circle and White Cliff Drive. The shift gives crews room to finish the remaining pavement repairs in the middle of the intersection of Custer Parkway and Canyon Creek Drive.

The city did not say how long the two-way traffic on the southbound side is expected to last.

A week after the last switch

The change comes one week after another shift a short distance north. On Monday, Oct. 12, southbound drivers between Lookout Drive and Canyon Creek Drive moved onto the newly built southbound roadway. One lane stays open in each direction on that stretch, with traffic in the outside lanes while the inside lanes remain closed for median improvements, landscaping and irrigation.

The city asked drivers to use caution and watch for changing traffic patterns in the work zone.

Where the rebuild stands

The work is part of the Custer Parkway Improvement Project, which is rebuilding the road and the water, sewer and storm drain lines beneath it from Campbell Road to State Highway 190. The city awarded the contract to DDM Construction in November 2024 and split the job into three segments. The project is partly paid for with money from the 2021 bond program.

In an Oct. 2 update, the city said pavement replacement between Canyon Creek Drive and Campbell Road was expected to be finished in November, depending on weather and on franchise utility work. It said the overall project should be substantially complete toward the end of the year, with small repair and replacement jobs continuing into early next year.
