Missed premium payments were the most common reason auto insurers gave for canceling policies in Richardson's three main ZIP codes this spring, according to state data the Texas Department of Insurance put online Thursday.

TDI added personal auto figures to a webpage that already listed reasons home insurance was declined, canceled or not renewed. The numbers come from reports insurers now must file under House Bill 2067, a 2025 law that also requires companies to give customers a written explanation. The page shows reasons by ZIP code and policy type, not by company.

"By giving Texans clearer insight into why insurance decisions are made, we're empowering them to navigate their coverage with confidence," Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford said in the agency's announcement.

What the numbers show

In ZIP codes 75080, 75081 and 75082, insurers reported 4,416 auto policy cancellations that took effect from April through June, along with 195 nonrenewals and 1,828 declined applications. By ZIP code, cancellations totaled 1,743 in 75080, 1,664 in 75081 and 1,009 in 75082.

A separate table sorts the notices insurers sent in those same three months by the reasons they cited. Of 5,769 cancellation notices in the three ZIP codes:

  • 3,616 listed failure to pay the premium on time, and for 3,307 it was the only reason given.
  • 1,954 said the policy was canceled at the policyholder's request.

Statewide, failure to pay appeared on about 71% of cancellation notices, compared with about 63% in the Richardson ZIP codes. Cancellations at the customer's request made up a larger share locally, about 34% against about 27% statewide.

Why applications were turned down

The make and model of the vehicle was cited on 732 of the 1,679 declination notices in the three ZIP codes, about 44%. Statewide the figure was about 39%. Another 244 local declinations listed a combination of claims history or driving record, liability exposure and credit or insurance score.

Nonrenewals were rare by comparison. Of 164 nonrenewal notices, the reason cited most often, on 74, was the catch-all category "other, insurer's action."

The state's vehicle count, a separate measure from policies, shows 79,569 vehicles garaged in the three ZIP codes as of the end of 2025.

Where to look

Reporting began April 1, 2026, and TDI says it updates the page as new data arrives. The figures, including the reason codes, are also posted as downloadable tables on the state's open data portal. TDI's help line is 800-252-3439.
