The Richardson Public Library is in the middle of moving home. Staff packed the collection earlier this week, and movers started carrying it into the renovated library at 421 W. Arapaho Road on Thursday, the city said Friday.
The library closed at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at the temporary location it has used during construction, 2360 Campbell Creek Blvd. The city expects to reopen later this fall and says it will announce a grand reopening date in the coming weeks.
What the closure means for patrons
- Due dates: Anything checked out before the closure is due once the library reopens.
- Returns: The book drop is closed. A new drop will be available at the renovated building after it opens.
- Paused services: Holds pickup, checkouts and returns, interlibrary loans, donations, notary services, 3D printing and most in-person programs are on hold until the building opens.
- Still running: Monthly book clubs and the Halloween Spookilicious program are meeting at City Hall instead. E-books, audiobooks, reference databases and language-learning tools remain available through the library's digital collection, and the city has asked patrons to make sure their library cards are current.
- Questions: Staff are answering phones during regular library hours and responding to email.
Earlier targets
The renovation is paid for through the voter-approved 2021 Bond Program. Earlier updates on the city's library renovation page set other targets along the way: completion by late 2025, then a grand reopening in the first quarter of 2026, then an opening in mid-2026.
City Manager Don Magner called the move back "an exciting milestone" and thanked library staff for keeping services going from the temporary site. "The temporary facility has served the community well during this transition," he said in the city's announcement.
