Neighborhood streets and cul-de-sacs across Richardson will fill with cookouts and picnics Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, as the city takes part in National Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m.
The annual event is meant to build ties between police and residents and between neighbors, with the aim of preventing crime. During the evening, officers, city officials and guests travel to registered party locations, according to the Richardson Police Department. Registration for block parties closed Sept. 25.
Bring a can
Partygoers are asked to come with canned food for the department's "Can Do" Food Drive. Donations collected at the parties go to the food pantry at Network of Community Ministries, the Richardson-area nonprofit that runs a mobile pantry and other food programs.
The drive follows a separate collection that wrapped up this week. Jars of peanut butter donated at city facilities during September for the North Texas Food Bank's annual Peanut Butter Drive were picked up and delivered to Network, the city said Friday. A Girl Scout troop brought 70 jars to City Hall in the drive's final days.
City staff expect to report the total number of pounds donated next week.
