Residents with boxes of old tax records or a closet full of dead gadgets have a drop-off date coming up: the Richardson Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association will hold its fall electronics recycling and document shredding event on Saturday, Oct. 17.

It will be held at the Heights Church, with drop-offs taken between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to the city.

What to bring, and what to leave home

Electronics of all types are accepted, with two exceptions: old tube-style televisions and bulky CRT computer monitors.

The shredding is meant for sensitive documents. Non-sensitive paper such as magazines and newspapers should go in the city's weekly recycling pickup instead. The city also reminds residents that paper they shred themselves at home belongs in the trash, not in the blue recycling bags.

A long-running drive

The alumni group says its last 10 events together shredded 356,440 pounds of paper, recycled 275,460 pounds of electronics and served 11,943 vehicles.

The association, made up of graduates of the Richardson Police Department's citizens academy, works to build community awareness of the department and its services. Money raised at the recycling and shredding events pays for year-round projects supporting the department, including meals and snacks for officers and staff during the holiday season and other efforts aimed at their well-being.

More information is posted on the city's environmental page at cor.net/EPI.
