Drivers who use Polk Street in downtown Richardson will lose that route for about two months starting this coming week.

Beginning the week of Oct. 19, Polk Street will be fully closed to traffic from the alley east of Texas Street to Greenville Avenue for roughly eight weeks, weather permitting, so crews can lay new pavement, the city said in a Richardson Today notice Friday.

The paving is the next phase of the Polk Street Improvement Project. Contractors are nearly done with the underground work, which includes new sanitary sewer and water mains, according to the city.

Getting to businesses

Sidewalks right next to businesses on the closed stretch are to stay open during paving where that is possible, the city said. Access may be cut off for short periods when crews build landscaping and new sidewalks.

After this section is paved, work will shift to the part of Polk Street between the alley and Interurban Street.

How we got here

Polk Street between Interurban Street and Greenville Avenue has been limited to eastbound traffic since late August. The city closed it in mid-August while crews removed a construction crane from the apartment development on the south side of the street, then reopened it one way so the street could be rebuilt with new water, wastewater and sanitary sewer lines.

At the time, the city estimated the reconstruction from Interurban to Greenville would take about a year. It said it had scheduled the work after major construction on Main Street and Belt Line Road was finished, to limit overlapping traffic problems downtown.

The city's project updates are posted at cor.net/Projects.
