One Valiente corner was enough to separate Dallas and LAFC

Scarce opportunities leave no room for decorative soccer. FC Dallas converted one of its opportunities against Los Angeles Football Club on Saturday night, and Joaquín Valiente made the delivery matter in a 1-0 victory at Toyota Stadium.

The Frisco club had little numerical separation from its opponent. LAFC held 51.6% possession to Dallas’ 48.4%, while Dallas finished with 13 shots and LAFC had 11. The difference in shots on target was slight—four for Dallas, three for the visitors. Even the corner count ended level at two apiece.

One of Dallas’ two corners, however, became the game’s only goal.

In the 33rd minute, FC Dallas won its first corner. A minute later, Joaquín Valiente sent the ball into the middle of the penalty area, where Osaze Urhoghide met it with a header that reached the upper-right corner. It was Valiente’s 13th assist of the season and the kind of service that gives a closely contested match its dividing line.

Dallas had created other attempts before the corner, but it had not scored. Dallas did not need a large supply of corners or a possession advantage to create the winner; it needed one delivery with enough accuracy for a teammate to finish. In a game with little separation elsewhere, precision outweighed volume.

Valiente’s influence showed up in smaller ways before and after the goal. In the 22nd minute, he assisted Kaick on a long-range attempt that missed. In the 54th, he set up Christian Cappis for a shot from the right side of the box that went wide.

Those chances did not change the score, but they showed a playmaker working through limited attacking traffic rather than requiring Dallas to dominate the ball.

Urhoghide supplied the finish

The corner only became an advantage because Urhoghide converted it. The defender’s header was his second goal this season, matching the total he reached in 2025. Dallas has scored nine headed goals this season, a total that places it second in MLS, according to the club’s recap; four of its goals have come from corners.

That background gives the sequence context without making it automatic. A corner is merely an opportunity until the ball reaches a dangerous area and someone turns it into a shot. Valiente provided the service, and Urhoghide supplied the clean finish. In a 1-0 match, both parts deserve equal billing.

Then came the less glamorous work of protecting a narrow lead.

Jonathan Sirois made the first of his three saves in the 13th minute, stopping Armindo Sieb’s attempt from long range. His most important intervention arrived soon after halftime, when Jeremy Ebobisse’s close-range effort was saved in the top-center area of the goal after Sieb provided a headed pass.

That prevented LAFC from leveling quickly and kept Dallas from having to chase the match it had just led.

Sirois also answered at the end. LAFC appeared to have scored through Sieb in the 73rd minute, but a video review overturned the goal. The decision left LAFC still needing an equalizer. In the third minute of stoppage time, Sirois saved Sergi Palencia’s attempt from the center of the box, closing the door on the visitors’ last significant opportunity.

The shutout came in Sirois’ 100th MLS regular-season appearance, and the club reported that Dallas had last kept successive clean sheets in 2024. Those are notable markers, but they should not obscure how close the match stayed. Dallas needed its goalkeeper late because one accurate LAFC finish would have erased the entire benefit of Valiente’s corner.

The club’s Valiente numbers are impressive without explaining every FC Dallas result. The team is 9-0-1 in matches where he has supplied an assist, and eight of Dallas’s last 11 games have included a Valiente assist. Dallas’s other corner came late, after the goal that would decide the match. Valiente had made the first opportunity count; the team never needed a second corner-kick finish.
