Traverse City is an easy place for the Dallas Stars to remember the past. Jamie Benn played there with James Neal at a 2008 rookie tournament, and later Stars such as Jason Robertson, Jake Oettinger, Wyatt Johnston and Lian Bichsel also appeared in the rink. For Richardson and North Texas, that makes Tuesday’s setting a neat piece of franchise history.
It is not, however, much of a hockey argument.
The meaningful part of Tuesday was practical. Dallas completed the final day of a four-day stay in Michigan with another practice after spending Saturday through Tuesday together. The club had finished its preseason schedule in Minnesota on Friday, then faced an unusual stretch before the regular season began.
General manager Jim Nill arranged access to a facility previously used by the Detroit Red Wings, turning an idle portion of the calendar into scheduled work.
That was a reasonable decision, especially with the Stars facing two games in two nights immediately after returning to Texas. They host St. Louis on Friday and visit Nashville on Saturday. The intervening Wednesday and Thursday practices will be the final bridge from the Michigan trip to games that carry consequences.
Coach Glen Gulutzan viewed the two Traverse City practices positively and placed value on the time the group spent together. His assessment is important because it explains the purpose of the detour: preserve structure, maintain routine and keep the team from drifting through a long competitive pause. But it remains an assessment of preparation, not proof that preparation solved anything.
There was no game in Traverse City to show that Dallas fixed a defensive-zone problem, improved its power play or established a preferred line combination. The trip supplied workdays; it did not supply performance evidence. That distinction should keep the setting in proportion. A borrowed rink can provide ice and organization. It cannot create a result before the puck drops.
The social side of the trip also deserves a measured reading. Golfing, fishing and group meals were part of the itinerary, alongside the practices. Those activities may make the stay more pleasant and may support the togetherness Gulutzan wants, but Tuesday’s actual hockey preparation is the firmer basis for judging the choice.
Even there, practice quality cannot be converted into a preseason statistic. The content of the sessions and the players’ execution in them were not publicly detailed.
