Cisco Unveils Nexus One Architecture for AI Data Centers

Cisco has announced the release of Cisco Nexus One, a next-generation data center networking architecture aimed at addressing the rapid evolution of data center environments driven by artificial intelligence and security demands. The company states that the new framework is designed to support AI workloads while protecting high-value assets from sophisticated, AI-driven cyberattacks.

Cisco describes Nexus One as an architecture rather than a standalone product or solution. The announcement builds upon the legacy of Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), which the company launched in 2014. According to Cisco, more than 13,000 organizations currently use ACI to manage critical workloads.

The new architecture aims to standardize key concepts introduced with ACI, such as group-based segmentation, service chaining, and deep observability, by anchoring them in open, interoperable standards through the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

The foundation of Nexus One relies on the widely deployed VXLAN EVPN technology. Cisco emphasizes that the architecture is designed to be open, extensible, and fully backward compatible with existing customer investments. This approach allows the system to accommodate the flexibility and scale required for modern AI and machine learning workloads without compromising on end-to-end security.

In conjunction with the architecture launch, Cisco revealed Cisco Cloud Control, a unified AgenticOps platform intended to manage the entire Cisco product portfolio through both human operators and AI agents. This platform integrates directly with Nexus One, bringing the data center networking portfolio under a single management plane.

The system utilizes AI Canvas, a dynamic workspace generated by live AI agents, to focus on specific operational issues.

Within this integrated environment, AI agents leverage the MCP server API on Nexus One controllers, which include Nexus Dashboard and Nexus Hyperfabric. These agents are designed to perform agentic operations that accelerate diagnostics, triage, and issue resolution. Cisco stated that the architecture provides flexibility across four layers of the networking stack, beginning with the silicon layer as the foundation for performance.

The announcement was made at Cisco Live 2026 in Las Vegas. Cisco noted that the shift toward AI-ready data centers and the need for greater architectural flexibility were the primary drivers behind the development of Nexus One. The company asserts that the new framework allows for bigger, more open, and flexible thinking while maintaining backward compatibility.
