The Air Force has awarded Raytheon a contract worth up to $8 billion to modernize and restart production of the strategic communications terminals managed by the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, according to the Pentagon's daily contract announcements for Oct. 13.
The award is an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract, which sets a ceiling rather than a guaranteed payment. It covers developmental upgrades to the terminals, services to restart their production and related technical studies. The Air Force did not seek competing bids, making it a sole-source award.
Only $800,000 was committed when the contract was signed, drawn from fiscal 2026 research, development, test and evaluation money. Further funding would come as the Air Force places orders.
The Nuclear Weapons Center at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts is handling the contract. Raytheon will do the work in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and Largo, Florida, and it is scheduled to run until Oct. 12, 2036.
The announcement did not name the specific terminal models involved. GovCon Wire, which first reported the award, noted it follows a string of other Air Force terminal and radar contracts for the RTX subsidiary.
