Alvarez Delivers Late
Alex Alvarez provided the decisive blow in the ninth inning, hitting a two-run home run to center field (424 feet) to lift the Houston Astros to a 10-8 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. The blast capped a high-scoring affair at Daikin Park, where the Astros overcame a persistent Rays offense to improve their record to 44-47, while Tampa Bay fell to 52-34.
Early Power Surge
The game began with immediate power from both clubs. In the first inning, Tampa Bay’s Wander Franco sparked the Rays with a home run to left center (437 feet), taking a 1-0 lead. Houston responded immediately in the same frame, as Alvarez homered to left center (403 feet) to tie the game, and Jose Altuve scored to give the Astros a 2-1 advantage.
The Rays regained momentum in the second inning. Joey Wendle’s sacrifice fly brought in one run, followed by a two-run homer by Randy Arozarena to right center (409 feet), putting Tampa Bay ahead 3-2. The Rays extended their lead in the third inning.
One run scored on a sacrifice fly by Franco, another on a single by Jose Siri, and a third when Yandy Diaz stole home, making it 6-2 Tampa Bay.
Rays Maintain Lead
Tampa Bay’s offense continued to pile on runs. In the fourth inning, a fielder’s choice allowed one run to score, followed by a two-run homer by Arozarena to right center (394 feet), pushing the lead to 7-4. The Rays’ pitching held firm for several innings, with Drew Rasmussen pitching five innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs.
