Richardson ISD moves course sign-up earlier, with future juniors and seniors choosing 2027-28 classes starting Nov. 9

The district shifted high school registration to line up with Dallas College's calendar. Students in grades 5 through 9 choose courses starting Jan. 11, and final verification letters go out in February and March.

Richardson ISD high school students who will be juniors and seniors next fall can start picking their 2027-28 classes on Monday, Nov. 9, months ahead of the old timeline.

The district said it moved high school course registration earlier so it better matches Dallas College's schedule. Many RISD students earn college credit through the community college while still in high school.

The calendar

  • Nov. 9: The course selection window opens for future 11th and 12th graders.
  • Jan. 11: Selection opens for current sixth through ninth graders in every learning community, and for current fifth graders in the Lake Highlands Learning Community.
  • Feb. 15: "Final call for courses" letters go to families of future ninth through 12th graders, a last chance to confirm what a student signed up for.
  • March 5: The same letters go to families of future seventh and eighth graders and of future sixth graders in Lake Highlands.

The district's announcement says incoming ninth and 10th graders will make their picks in the spring.

What students choose

At the high school level, students choose regular, advanced or AP core classes and can add options that earn college credit or industry certifications. Future eighth graders can sign up for high school credit courses, and seventh and eighth graders choose among electives such as introductory career and technical education courses, AVID, fine arts, world languages and athletics.

Each high school has a college and career advisor in addition to its counselors, and the district's Chart Your Course website carries the course catalogs and graduation requirements.

Not the same as enrolling

The district stresses that choosing courses does not enroll a student for next year. Families must still complete RISD's separate online enrollment through PowerSchool, which has its own deadlines and document requirements.

Questions go to each student's campus counselor.
