Richardson ISD is observing Attendance Awareness Month this September to partner with families and the community in emphasizing the importance of student presence. The district has established a goal of 96% attendance, stating that for every student to reach the North Star Goal of meeting or exceeding growth targets, they must be on time and in the classroom every day.
The district notes that regular attendance has a lasting impact on student learning. In Pre-K, missing school reduces time for building critical social-emotional skills and language opportunities key to early literacy. Frequent absences can also make it harder for students to adjust to the classroom environment. For elementary students, attendance strongly predicts grade-level performance and helps students feel better about school and themselves.
According to the district, consistent attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic and future success. Students who miss five to nine days in a semester are 25% less likely to graduate in four years. Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing two days a month, accounts for 10% of the school year and can significantly affect academic success.
