Richardson ISD is shifting its course registration schedule earlier for high school students to better align with Dallas College’s timeline. Future 11th and 12th graders will begin selecting courses on Nov. 9. Incoming 9th and 10th graders will select their courses in the spring.

The district stated that this updated schedule provides families with an earlier and clearer look at the academic opportunities available to students.

Current Lake Highlands Learning Community 5th grade students and 6th through 9th grade students districtwide will make course decisions in January and February for the 2027-28 school year. The district noted that these students will have access to resources to help navigate the process.

Throughout the selection period, campus counselors will guide students in choosing courses that align with their interests, academic goals, and post-high school plans.

Course selection deadlines and requirements vary by grade level. For middle and junior high students, future 6th graders in the Lake Highlands learning community will choose regular or advanced core courses and one elective. Future 7th and 8th graders can select from expanded electives, including CTE introduction courses, AVID, fine arts, world languages, and athletics.

Future 8th graders also have the option to enroll in high school credit courses.

For high school students, future 9th through 12th graders will choose regular, advanced, or AP level core courses. Students may also consider options to earn college credit or certifications. The district highlighted that students can earn associate degrees and credits via UT Austin and Dallas College, as well as industry certifications in high-demand fields.

Every high school also has a College and Career Advisor to assist with portfolio curation and the college application process.

Families are encouraged to explore the Chart Your Course website and their student’s campus website for specific deadlines and instructions. The district emphasized that course selection does not constitute enrollment for the 2027-28 school year. Families must complete a separate enrollment process through PowerSchool at RISD Online Enrollment.
