Carmello Brooks, a University of Houston football player, was in court Monday on two criminal charges. One involves an allegation of assault against a pregnant person, while the other concerns alleged damage to a door handle during an August dispute in northwest Harris County.
Nariah Harley, who is connected to the first case, told the judge she wants the charge dismissed. She said an argument occurred at Brooks’ apartment last week, where he repeatedly told her to leave and eventually lifted her and put her outside when she refused. Harley said Brooks called police himself.
She also said he is the father of her baby, that she does not consider herself a victim and that she wants all charges dismissed so they can move forward.
Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said officers’ body-camera video and Brooks’ 911 call are expected to be reviewed by prosecutors. The second case involves another woman and her sister, who family members said grew up with Brooks in Killeen and went to high school with him. Harley is also from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University.
Brooks is suspended from the football team as the cases continue, Wasserstein said, and he hopes Brooks can attend classes. No further case details were provided.
