Tommy Castellanos has accounted for three touchdowns in two games at Texas Tech, yet the veteran quarterback’s place in the offense is still being determined. He has appeared in selected situations alongside starter Will Hammond, producing both useful plays and turnovers.
Against Houston last Friday, Castellanos threw an interception on his first play while trying to throw the ball away, Red Raiders Wire reported. He later entered again near the goal line and ran for a 3-yard touchdown. Coach Joey McGuire said afterward that Hammond remains the Red Raiders’ starter, while also confirming that Texas Tech will keep using packages designed for Castellanos.
Castellanos joined the team late in preseason camp as an emergency backup. Texas Tech added him after the transfer portal had closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation had concluded. Hammond is recovering from a torn ACL, according to the report.
Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ usage among 10 questions that could influence the college football season. His future deployment, including possible continued appearances near the goal line, has not been decided.
