Baylor will turn to Nate Bennett for its Week 2 game against Prairie View A&M after quarterback DJ Lagway was ruled out with a high-ankle sprain. Pete Thamel reported that Bennett is set to make the first college start of his career.

Lagway was injured during Baylor’s 17-16 defeat against Auburn but stayed in the game. He finished 27 of 54 passing for 333 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Earlier in the week, coach Dave Aranda had called Lagway day to day. On3 reported that Lagway had been trying to play despite the injury, though he was considered doubtful for the matchup.

The Bears scored a touchdown in the closing seconds against Auburn, then failed to complete a two-point conversion that would have given them the win. Baylor is 0-1, and the report said it was unclear whether Lagway’s condition influenced the decision to attempt the conversion. The team is scheduled to host Louisiana Tech next weekend and open Big 12 play against Colorado on Sept. 26.

No further recovery timetable for Lagway was provided.
