The Dallas Cowboys are adjusting their offseason strategy as they gear up for their season opener against the New York Giants. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced that Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith will miss at least four weeks due to thumb surgery scheduled for Tuesday. T.J. Bass will take over in his place, with Schottenheimer expressing trust in Bass's capabilities.

In light of these developments, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones suggested that the team might pursue trades to enhance their defense. During his radio show, Jones mentioned that recent contract restructures have generated considerable cap space, enabling the team to explore potential acquisitions. He stated, "We're in play" regarding trades, highlighting the defense as a primary focus.

Recently, the Cowboys adjusted contracts for defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland, and tight end Jake Ferguson, resulting in $19 million in salary-cap space. These financial maneuvers were characterized as bookkeeping changes that do not affect current salaries but provide greater flexibility moving forward.

Jones noted that this newfound cap space could surpass $33 million by the 2026 season, creating opportunities for player acquisitions. Possible targets include standout players such as Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders, linebacker Jordyn Brooks of the Miami Dolphins, and free agent Bobby Wagner.

While specific trade details are still uncertain, Jones indicated a willingness to consider using high draft picks to strengthen the team immediately, stating that a top pick could be sacrificed this year for a player who can contribute significantly now.

As the Cowboys navigate these changes, their emphasis remains on fortifying their defensive lineup ahead of the upcoming season.
