The Dallas Cowboys have made notable adjustments to their roster, leading to the departure of cornerback Josh Butler after three years. Butler, who joined the Cowboys in 2023 following participation in two spring football leagues, shared his feelings about the release, expressing both disappointment and pride.
In a social media update, Butler noted his defensive achievements, claiming he never allowed a touchdown or a pass over 20 yards during his time with the team. He also reflected on his return to football after a four-year break, expressing gratitude for the Cowboys organization.
Throughout the preseason, Butler demonstrated his abilities with six tackles in three games. Over his three seasons, he played in six games, accumulating 26 tackles, five pass deflections, and one sack. However, an ACL injury in 2024 sidelined him for the entire 2023 season, affecting his playing time in 2025.
Despite his solid contributions, Butler faced intense competition at the cornerback position, which contributed to his release. The Cowboys have not dismissed the idea of signing him to their practice squad, as he has proven to be a dependable depth player when healthy.
As the Cowboys continue to assess their roster, it remains unclear if Butler will be picked up by another NFL team or if he may return to the Cowboys in a different role. The organization is actively looking for ways to strengthen their roster in pursuit of a Super Bowl title in 2026.
