The Dallas Cowboys have announced the release of quarterback Joe Milton as of Monday. Milton joined the team in April 2025 after being acquired from the New England Patriots in exchange for a fifth-round pick. He had been in competition for the backup quarterback role against Sam Howell throughout the offseason.
Earlier on the same day, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, which led to Milton's departure to fit Demercado onto the 53-man roster. During the 2026 preseason, Milton participated in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also rushed 12 times for 14 yards, scoring one rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer had expressed confidence in both Milton and Howell as backup options, noting the complexities of the team's offensive system. Milton had mentioned his growing comfort with the offense after a full season and a second training camp, emphasizing the need for a solid understanding of the playbook.
With Milton's release, the Cowboys' quarterback lineup now includes Dak Prescott and Sam Howell. Milton is subject to waivers and may have the chance to join the Cowboys' practice squad if he goes unclaimed.
