Baylor University's athletic director, Doug McNamee, has outlined the expectations for head coach Dave Aranda, focusing on the need for momentum rather than a specific number of wins to keep his position past the 2026 season. This approach was shared by CBS Sports college football writer Shehan Jeyarajah.
McNamee stated that the emphasis should be on the overall atmosphere and support surrounding the football program. He noted, "It's not about the numbers; it's about the momentum, the feel, and the vibe around the program." He also called for increased engagement from supporters, urging them to attend games and contribute to NIL initiatives and scholarships.
Aranda's record at Baylor currently stands at 36-37, following a notable 2021 season that featured a Big 12 championship. However, the team has faced challenges since then, posting a 22-28 record and experiencing three losing seasons in the last four years, including a disappointing finish of 5-7 in 2025.
After taking over the athletic department in December, McNamee is set to evaluate Aranda's performance fully in 2026. As the upcoming season approaches, which starts on September 5 against Auburn, McNamee has made it clear that while no specific win total is required, the program must show progress and foster belief to secure ongoing support.
He remarked, "The program needs to provide a compelling narrative to attract investment and support."
