Tar Heels Clinch Narrow Victory in Ireland

North Carolina defeated TCU 15-10 on Saturday at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, claiming a 1-0 start to the season while TCU fell to 0-1. The contest featured a balanced first quarter where both offenses found the end zone, but it was the Tar Heels’ ability to score in the final two quarters that proved decisive.

The game showcased high-efficiency passing from both signal-callers, with North Carolina’s Billy Edwards Jr. and TCU’s Jaden Craig both exceeding 175 passing yards.

First Quarter See-Saw

The scoring began in the opening drive as Aeron Burrell connected on a 20-yard field goal to give North Carolina an early 3-0 lead. TCU responded swiftly through Kyle Lemmermann, who kicked a 31-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3.

The momentum shifted in the latter part of the quarter when Jon Denman rushed for a two-yard touchdown, extended by a successful kick from Lemmermann, to put the Horned Frogs ahead 10-3. Jaylen McGill then answered for the Tar Heels with a nine-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a Burrell kick, to level the score at 10-10 heading into the second stanza.

Second-Half Breakdown

The second quarter saw no touchdowns, but a critical defensive play altered the trajectory. A safety awarded to North Carolina provided the two-point cushion that the team would never relinquish, moving the score to 12-10. TCU’s offense stalled in the third quarter, failing to register any points.

The decisive moment arrived in the third period when Burrell drilled a 28-yard field goal, extending the Tar Heels' lead to 15-10. TCU was unable to answer in the final frame, leaving the score unchanged at the final whistle.

Billy Edwards Jr. led the Tar Heels with 232 passing yards on 16 of 28 attempts. Jelani Thurman was the top receiver for North Carolina, catching four passes for 94 yards. Benjamin Hall contributed 36 rushing yards on 11 carries.
