A Thrilling Finish in Austin
The Texas Longhorns survived a second-half surge by the Ole Miss Rebels to claim a 34-27 victory on Saturday at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. Despite building a commanding lead early, the Longhorns had to withstand a determined rally from their visitors, ultimately relying on key scoring plays in the fourth quarter to secure the win in front of a crowd of 104,306.
Early Dominance and Subsequent Struggles
Texas opened with offensive efficiency, taking control of the first quarter. After Ole Miss kicker Lucas Carneiro gave his team an early 3-0 lead on a field goal, Texas responded immediately. Arch Manning provided the spark with a 2-yard touchdown run, followed by two more scores in the second quarter: a 50-yard pass to Ryan Wingo and a 2-yard rush by Michael Terry III.
These efforts propelled Texas to a 24-3 advantage heading into halftime.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically after the break. Ole Miss defense forced a critical turnover when Kam Franklin recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss then connected with Horatio Fields on two separate passes, one from 6 yards and another from 27 yards, to tie the game at 24-24 late in the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter Scoring Determines Outcome
With the score tied, both offenses found their rhythm again. Texas regained the lead when Arch Manning executed a 1-yard touchdown run, putting the Longhorns ahead 31-24. Gianni Spetic added a 33-yard field goal to extend the lead to 34-24. Yet, Ole Miss refused to fold. Chambliss threw for another touchdown, and Lucas Carneiro kicked a 39-yard field goal to make the final score 34-27.
