The University of Texas at Dallas is launching a new bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering this fall. The program was officially approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in December 2024.
Offered through the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, the Bachelor of Science aims to provide students with expertise across multiple disciplines. The curriculum integrates engineering principles with physics and chemistry, allowing learners to specialize in areas such as microelectronics and energy systems.
Dr. Manuel Quevedo-Lopez, who serves as the department head for materials science and engineering, stated that the program is designed to help students understand how to develop new materials by combining perspectives from various fields. He noted that the interdisciplinary approach equips graduates with a unique skill set suitable for either immediate employment or further academic study.
Quevedo-Lopez also holds the Texas Instruments Distinguished University Chair in Nanoelectronics and directs the Center for Harsh Environments Semiconductor Systems at the university. He explained that the degree may appeal to students who prefer not to focus on a single discipline, offering flexibility to tailor coursework toward semiconductors or energy.
Graduates will be prepared for careers in industries including semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, biomedical sectors, and energy. The program also provides opportunities for hands-on research through centers focused on extreme environment electronics and energy storage.
Dr. Stephanie G. Adams, dean of the Jonsson School, emphasized that the future of engineering requires flexibility. She said the new degree prepares students to impact their chosen careers by providing a broad foundation in how materials function and can be manipulated.
