The Virginia Belle home, recognized as Richardson’s oldest surviving structure, has reached a significant stage in its preservation efforts. The building, constructed between 1886 and 1889, was recently relocated to Huffhines Park. This move marks the latest step in a long history of relocations for the property, which was originally situated at the intersection of Sherman and Kaufman streets.
The structure was moved approximately three miles to its current location in October. To facilitate the transport, workers had to detach a portion of the building. Before this final move, the home had been situated at the former Owens Spring Creek Farm and had undergone several other relocations over the decades.
The house is named for Virginia Belle, an educator who ran a private school on the property for more than four decades. City officials have outlined a long-term plan to restore the interior to its original state. They also intend to improve the surrounding outdoor areas to create a yard suitable for community events.
Richardson resident Anita White, who grew up in the neighborhood where the home originally stood, has followed the restoration closely. White recalled walking through the area to attend football games at Richardson Junior High and noted that she had previously babysat for families in that vicinity. She described the current progress as a step toward realizing the project's potential.
City officials, including a representative named Magner, stated that they are exploring options to secure sponsors or donors. The goal is to transform the property into an educational space and a venue for community gatherings. Magner emphasized that the exterior improvements will allow events to utilize the yard area.
