A recent study from Southern Methodist University (SMU) forecasts that the implementation of autonomous vehicles in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area could lead to a 33% decrease in traffic delays by 2045. This research is particularly relevant for Richardson, located about 12 miles north of Dallas, as it explores the potential benefits of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) on traffic conditions.
Led by SMU civil and environmental professor Khaled Abdelghany, the study utilized a travel model from the North Central Texas Council of Governments. It assessed various scenarios with 25%, 50%, and 100% driverless vehicles on key routes like U.S. 75 and Interstate 635.
The findings suggest that if all vehicles were autonomous, daily vehicle-hours traveled could drop by at least 19% as commuters might choose to live farther from their workplaces.
Abdelghany pointed out that traffic congestion stems from factors beyond just high demand, including speed variability and stop-and-go driving that disrupt flow efficiency. The study, published in the Journal of Urban Technology, provides insights into how autonomous vehicles could enhance traffic dynamics in the DFW region, despite ongoing concerns about early operational challenges.
