City Missions, a nonprofit organization that has served the community for over five years, continues its efforts to assist individuals experiencing homelessness in Collin County and surrounding areas. The group is currently focused on distributing essential items through its mobile outreach unit while simultaneously working to secure funding for a permanent resource center in Plano.
During Saturday outreach events, volunteers provide necessities such as socks and hygiene products directly to people in need. Cherie Privett, the organization’s founder and executive director, noted that the team visits areas where they have established trusted relationships with individuals, remaining adaptable as needs and locations shift.
The organization aims to maintain the dignity of those it serves and connect them with resources that promote stability, including medical care, identification assistance, showers, recovery programs, and housing solutions.
The nonprofit also operates a mobile closet near downtown Plano twice a month. Privett highlighted a specific need for men’s clothing, stating that approximately 80 percent of the individuals served are men, yet the majority of clothing donations received are for women. The organization relies on support from individuals, local churches, faith-based groups, and businesses to sustain these operations.
Local educational institutions have recently contributed to the cause. Students at Harrison Intermediate collected hygiene products and other items last semester, and the Burnett Junior High PTA selected City Missions to receive a grant that was presented in May. Privett, whose husband Kevin works for Wylie ISD, described the support from local schools as meaningful.
