As the 2026-27 UIL seasons commence, Richardson ISD students are returning to the field for practice and games. The district has released a list of precautions that coaches, sponsors, athletic trainers, band directors, and administrators may employ to ensure a safe environment for student athletes and marching bands during periods of excessive heat.

RISD follows UIL medical advisory board standards that limit the length of practices, mandate waiting periods between practices, and prohibit two-a-day practices on back-to-back days. To manage heat risks, staff are advised to stretch inside in air conditioning and conduct walk-through drills in cooled areas. Practices should be scheduled for early morning or evening hours.

Additional measures include shortening practice durations, providing water at every drill, and implementing water breaks every 15 to 30 minutes. Administrators may extend the length of these breaks and utilize walk-through sprinklers on the field. Athletes are encouraged to practice without helmets and shoulder pads when possible. Athletic trainers are to be prepared with water bottles and ice towels.

The district also recommends weighing athletes before and after practice to monitor weight loss and providing drinks that replenish electrolytes and nutrients. Finding or providing shade is advised, as is shortening or eliminating conditioning at the end of practice. Coaches and athletic trainers will monitor all athletes during practice and may cancel outside practice if necessary.

Hydration stations have been set up inside RISD stadiums for spectators. Residents and families can view the full UIL website regarding heat stress and athletic participation by clicking the link provided in the original announcement.
