Tyler Goodson is joining the Dallas Cowboys’ backfield plans after the team waived Israel Abanikanda and assigned Goodson to its practice squad. The move came after Dallas released 2025 draft selections Phil Mafah and Jaydon Blue late in training camp.
Goodson spent camp with the Atlanta Falcons and produced 92 rushing yards in the preseason, including a 49-yard touchdown. He previously played three NFL seasons for the Indianapolis Colts, totaling 264 yards and one touchdown on 54 carries. He also had 19 receptions for 103 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Falcons running back Bijan Robinson told Blogging The Boys’ RJ Ochoa that Goodson is an elite player who can cut across the field, catch passes and fill several roles in an offense. Robinson added that he wanted Goodson to stay in Atlanta. Dallas is seeking added depth after Malik Davis was injured, and Goodson’s speed and receiving skills provide another backfield option.
The source reported that Goodson may have limited opportunities to play, making the practice-squad spot a form of roster insurance.
The Cowboys are coming off a loss to the New York Giants and will face the Washington Commanders in Week 2. Dallas had less than 100 rushing yards in the opener, while Javonte Williams led the team with 41 yards.
