The Cowboys lost 28-20 to the New York Giants in their 2026 opener, with eight penalties costing Dallas 85 yards. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team fell short of its standard and needed better coaching and execution, particularly from younger players who must develop quickly.
Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart completed enough plays to gain 230 yards through the air and added 54 yards on the ground. Dallas struggled when Dart left the pocket, allowing him to extend plays. A taunting penalty against Javonte Williams after a touchdown also pushed Brandon Aubrey’s extra-point attempt farther from the goal posts.
Schottenheimer said the coaching staff and players shared responsibility for the penalties.
Dak Prescott was 22-of-34 for 175 yards, with touchdown passes to CeeDee Lamb and Williams. Williams also scored on a run, but Dallas could not overcome its discipline and execution problems. Schottenheimer called the outcome humbling and said the Cowboys started poorly on offense and defense.
Dallas, which allowed an NFL-high 30.1 points per game in 2025, entered this season with new defensive personnel. The Cowboys are scheduled to host Washington next Sunday, with no further preparation details provided.
