Marist Liufau, an outside linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, is set to have surgery due to a fractured forearm. This injury was sustained during a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, as confirmed by head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Liufau is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.
Schottenheimer commended Liufau's competitive nature, stating, "What a great competitor. He'll be back." The linebacker was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft after playing at Notre Dame. Over the last two seasons, he has participated in every game for the Cowboys, totaling 34 appearances.
Entering his third season, Liufau has shifted from inside to outside linebacker under defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He has expressed appreciation for the support from his teammates and coaches during this transition. Last season, his role on special teams expanded significantly, with Liufau playing 75% of the snaps compared to 35% in his rookie year.
Schottenheimer noted the impact of Liufau's absence, saying, "Losing Marist as a football player is tough. Unfortunately, it's part of the business." The team will proceed with the surgery and adapt accordingly. Liufau's injury could affect the Cowboys' roster decisions, as NFL teams can designate up to two players for return, provided they miss a minimum of four weeks.
