The Dallas Cowboys are weighing roster decisions ranging from defensive communication duties to future salary-cap flexibility before their season opener at the New York Giants. The matchup’s projected over-under is 48.5 points. Nick Harris picked Dallas to win while predicting the game would finish below that total, citing the Cowboys’ experience, opening week and possible weather conditions.
Dallas signed running back Israel Abanikanda from its practice squad after Malik Davis suffered a hip injury requiring surgery. Abanikanda is expected to be the third running back. Davis had been behind Javonte Williams through training camp while competing with Jaydon Blue, whom Dallas waived at the end of the preseason.
The Cowboys then claimed Emari Demercado from Kansas City, and he is set to work behind Williams in the opener. Fullback Hunter Luepke is also on the roster.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said DeMarvion Overshown will handle much of the communication through the defensive helmet, with other players ready for different defensive packages. Dallas is also considering veteran tackle D.J. Humphries, who became available after Washington released him.
Humphries was Arizona’s 24th overall pick in 2015, became a full-time starter in 2016 and dealt with injuries through 2023. A report said Dallas could save about $2 million against the cap by trading receiver Ryan Flournoy before his $500,000 roster bonus is paid. His contract also has a $1.5 million base salary and $1.25 million in remaining signing-bonus proration.
