The Houston Texans have brought George Odum up from their practice squad for the Cincinnati Bengals game, marking his second elevation this season. Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reported the move on Sept. 19. Odum played 71% of Houston’s special teams snaps against Buffalo and made one tackle in the Texans’ 36-31 loss.
Odum is in his ninth NFL season and previously played for the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers. He received one All-Pro honor with each team. His career record was reported as 205 tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Another listing credited him with 209 tackles and the same totals in the other categories, along with 12 starts across 109 games.
Caleb Bullock and Reed Blankenship are healthy, but Houston is using Odum for special teams. Coach DeMeco Ryans has previously praised his preseason playmaking. Pro Football Focus placed Odum 26th among 29 Texans special teams players for the Buffalo game, while noting that its overall grade does not describe his work in every phase.
This call-up leaves Odum with one possible elevation remaining. Houston is scheduled to play the Colts in Week 3, which could be his final elevation before the team would have to place him on its 53-man roster or choose another option.
