A study conducted by Southern Methodist University has revealed that fully autonomous vehicles could potentially reduce traffic delays in the Dallas-Fort Worth region by as much as 33 percent, all without the need for additional highway lanes. This research is particularly relevant for Richardson, located just 20 miles northeast of downtown Dallas, as it highlights the future of transportation in the metroplex.
The study was led by Khaled Abdelghany, a researcher at the SMU institute focused on engineering and humanity, in collaboration with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute's travel forecasting team. Partial funding and traffic modeling were provided by the region's council of governments.
Researchers conducted 25 experiments simulating regional traffic in 2045, comparing scenarios with full, half, and a quarter adoption of autonomous vehicles against a baseline scenario with no such vehicles. In the scenario where all vehicles were autonomous, delays decreased by up to 33 percent, and the time spent in congested traffic reduced by at least 19 percent.
The underlying principle is that human drivers often create traffic jams through erratic braking and inconsistent spacing, which can cause disruptions that ripple through traffic. "Autonomous vehicles may help mitigate these effects through smoother and more coordinated driving," Abdelghany stated.
Dallas was ranked as the 17th most congested city in the U.S. in 2024, with drivers losing approximately 36 hours annually due to traffic.
Texas has emerged as a leader in the testing and deployment of driverless freight services, with Aurora Innovation launching commercial driverless deliveries between Dallas and Houston in April 2025. This marked the first such service in the United States, with trucks operating along the I-45 corridor without human drivers, while being monitored remotely.
The I-45 route was strategically chosen, as nearly half of all truck freight in Texas travels between these two cities. Aurora has also expanded its operations to include a second route from Fort Worth to El Paso, with plans to deploy hundreds of trucks.
Other companies like Kodiak Robotics, Waymo Via, Gatik, Plus, and Waabi are also developing autonomous trucking solutions in Texas, solidifying the state's position as a hub for this industry.
In the passenger sector, Waymo has been operating a paid robotaxi service in Austin and has expanded its services to select riders in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, with plans for broader availability by the end of the year.
While the rise of driverless technology raises questions about job displacement, experts suggest that the nature of work will evolve rather than disappear. Positions will still be needed for vehicle maintenance, remote monitoring, and logistics support.
Industry estimates predict that autonomous vehicles could contribute around $70 billion to the U.S. GDP and yield approximately $9 billion in annual consumer savings by 2030, largely due to improved safety and efficiency.
