RTX Corporation subsidiary Raytheon announced Tuesday that it is constructing a large space telescope for the Lazuli Space Observatory. The project supports a science mission funded by Schmidt Sciences, an organization established by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Wendy Schmidt. The observatory is designed to investigate exoplanets, distant galaxies, and other astronomical events.
The instrument features a primary mirror measuring 3.1 meters in diameter. Raytheon stated that this configuration will create the largest unobstructed telescope aperture ever launched on a commercial spacecraft. The company confirmed that manufacturing is currently underway and the telescope is scheduled for delivery in 2028.
To address the extreme temperature fluctuations common in orbit, the telescope utilizes lightweight materials engineered to maintain stability. This design allows the observatory to begin collecting usable scientific data more rapidly after environmental shifts in space. Additionally, an off-axis layout positions support structures outside the light path, which reduces visual interference and enhances image clarity.
The system incorporates automated software and sensors that continuously adjust optical alignment while in operation. This capability removes the need for manual corrections by ground engineers, allowing the telescope to fine-tune its components to preserve image quality throughout its mission. Raytheon verified the technology using digital twin simulations before finalizing the design.
The contract illustrates Raytheon's strategy to diversify beyond its defense operations into advanced space and scientific systems. While specific financial details were not released and the deal is not expected to significantly impact RTX's near-term earnings, the project highlights growing demand for optical systems among public and private space organizations. The technology may also support future government and commercial research programs.
