Illinois State University will confer an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree upon Jon Farney, the president and chief executive officer of State Farm Insurance. The Illinois State University governing board approved the honor during a meeting on Friday. The degree will be presented at the institution's winter graduation ceremonies scheduled for December 12.
Farney is a graduate of Illinois State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. His professional history with State Farm began in 1993 as a college intern.
He progressed through various leadership roles within the organization before assuming the presidency in January 2024 and becoming chief executive officer in June of that year.
A board resolution highlighted Farney's connection to the university, noting that his engagement aligns with the school's mission to promote student-centered education, innovation, collaborative scholarship, and intercultural understanding. The resolution further stated that his leadership at State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and his personal philanthropy demonstrate a sustained commitment to supporting students, faculty, and the university's long-term success.
State Farm maintains a significant presence on the Illinois State University campus. The State Farm Hall of Business is located on the south end of the university quad. Farney's alma mater selected him for this recognition due to his professional trajectory and his contributions to the educational community.
