Raytheon is preparing to resume manufacturing of the ADM-160 Miniature Air-Launched Decoy (MALD) to satisfy increasing orders from the United States and its NATO partners. The company stated that the system could begin shipping to customers within two years following a contract award.
The decoy is designed to mimic the radar signature of high-value aircraft, compelling enemy air defense systems to target the decoy rather than crewed planes, unmanned vehicles, or strike weapons.
The restart effort benefits from an existing production line that Raytheon describes as warm, with major tooling and test equipment still in place. This infrastructure allows the company to bypass the need to build a new industrial base from scratch.
Justin Jenia, vice president of Strike Initiatives for Air & Space Defense Systems at Raytheon, noted that many engineers and technicians with decades of experience on the program remain involved. He emphasized that the company is re-energizing the line rather than rebuilding it.
Over the past two years, Raytheon has utilized internal research and development funds to enhance the system's reliability and qualify additively manufactured airframes. The modular design permits the replacement of the nose section with various payloads, including jammers or kinetic warheads.
Jenia described this approach as faster and more affordable for customers, noting that the system can be integrated onto new aircraft platforms in days and has demonstrated launch capabilities from cargo aircraft.
Initial production is scheduled to take place in Tucson, Arizona, to support rapid early deliveries. Raytheon also plans to establish a second manufacturing line in Europe to support longer-term allied demand, pending necessary approvals. Jenia highlighted a commitment to a "built in Europe, for Europe" strategy to expand capacity and deliver capabilities to allies more quickly.
