Raytheon, a business unit of RTX, is constructing a large-aperture telescope for the Lazuli Space Observatory. The observatory is part of the Schmidt Sciences organization, which operates under the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Observatory System. The company has completed an accelerated preliminary design review and is currently in the production phase. Delivery of the telescope is planned for 2028.
The instrument features a 3.1-meter off-axis primary mirror. This design provides an unobscured aperture, which Raytheon states will be the largest of its kind launched on a commercial platform. The mirror’s diameter allows for sharper imagery and greater sensitivity compared to previous designs.
The telescope utilizes advanced materials that remain stable without requiring time to adjust to temperature fluctuations in space. This stability ensures consistent performance throughout its orbit.
The system employs auto-alignment technology to maintain optical quality. Validated through digital twin simulations and optical engineering, the technology continuously optimizes performance without manual intervention. This capability allows the observatory to begin collecting high-quality data rapidly. The design supports both time-critical observations and long-duration monitoring tasks.
Jeff McCall, vice president of Mission Solutions & Payloads at Raytheon, stated that the company is applying proven technology to provide the production speed and reliability required for the project. He noted that large-aperture systems enable a wide range of missions in demanding space environments.
The telescope’s on-orbit tuning capabilities are intended to amplify scientific insights regarding distant planets, dynamic astrophysical events, and the evolution of the universe.
