Richardson ISD staff members made home visits Monday to greet families entering the district through open enrollment and to hear directly from parents about their needs.
Superintendent Tabitha Branum brought employees together earlier in the day and gave them names of households with children new to RISD. The outreach focused on students joining the district for the first time, including some who live outside district boundaries.
"Outreach is part of what I think all of us are trying to do to make sure that our families know that when they choose us, that we're going to work hard to earn their trust and to keep it," Branum said.
One stop was at the home of Becca Bass, who let Branum and reporters come inside. The Bass family enrolled their daughter in RISD after she previously attended school in a different district.
RISD's open enrollment policy permits students who do not reside within the district to attend its schools. The report said more school systems are using similar approaches because state funding is linked to each student, and families may choose other districts, charter schools or private schools.
