City Missions has spent more than five years providing essential items to people experiencing homelessness in Collin County and nearby areas. The organization operates a mobile outreach unit that travels to various locations to distribute supplies and connect with individuals in need.
Volunteers focus on distributing items such as socks and hygiene products during Saturday outreach events, aiming to build trust and relationships with the community they serve.
Cherie Privett, the founder and executive director of City Missions, explained that the team visits areas where they have established connections with friends experiencing homelessness. The group remains adaptable to shifting needs and locations.
A core value of the organization is preserving the dignity of those it serves while guiding them toward stability through access to medical care, identification cards, showers, recovery programs, and housing solutions.
The organization also maintains a mobile closet that opens twice a month near downtown Plano. Privett noted a significant disparity in donations, stating that approximately 80 percent of the individuals served are men, yet most clothing donations are for women. Consequently, there is a current need for men’s clothing.
Support for City Missions comes from individuals, local churches, faith-based groups, and businesses. Recently, two Wylie schools contributed to the effort. Students at Harrison Intermediate collected hygiene products and other items during the last semester. Additionally, the Burnett Junior High PTA selected City Missions to receive a grant that was presented in May.
Privett, whose husband Kevin works for Wylie ISD and co-founded the organization, expressed appreciation for the tangible support from local schools. She emphasized that new donors and existing partnerships are vital as needs change with each season.
