Garland Independent School District trustees finalized the financial plan for the 2026-27 academic year during a June 22 meeting. The adopted budget outlines a General Fund deficit projected to exceed $28 million. The district also used the occasion to recognize several award-winning departments and honor Mark Booker, the purchasing director, during his final board meeting.
The session opened with a public hearing regarding the proposed budget and tax rate for the upcoming school year. Deputy Superintendent Darrell Dodds presented the financial proposals for the General Fund, Student Nutrition Services Fund, and Debt Service Fund. He clarified that the tax rate was not scheduled for approval during that specific evening.
Dodds indicated that the proposed tax rate for 2026-27 is anticipated to remain at $0.786900. He explained that certified property values are expected to be received in July. Those values will subsequently be presented to the trustees in September for further consideration.

The district noted that Garland ISD students achieved gains in four of five tested subjects on the spring State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness end-of-course exams. The Texas Education Agency released these results, which measure student performance in subjects including Algebra I.
