More than 300 people gathered in Wylie on June 25 to celebrate the grand opening of Jericho Village, a new 38-unit income-based housing development. Located at 511 W. Brown St., the project marks the first of its kind in the city and represents a significant milestone for the organizers who spent years bringing the vision to life.
The development is a project of the Plano-based Agape Resource & Assistance Center. Founded by CEO Janet Collinsworth, the organization focuses on helping women and families transition out of homelessness, domestic violence, and human trafficking. The community provides studio through three-bedroom apartments, including units accessible for individuals with disabilities.
Beyond housing, the site offers on-site education, counseling, and other support services intended to promote long-term stability for residents.
The celebration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by the Wylie Area Chamber of Commerce, along with food trucks and face painting. Jon Bailey, executive director of Hope for the Cities, served as master of ceremonies. He praised Collinsworth’s perseverance in turning the project from an idea into reality, noting that many attendees had watched the development evolve over time.
Wylie Mayor Matthew Porter shared that the name Agape resonated with him due to a family heirloom bearing the same Greek word for unconditional love. He stated that the community is called to care for all residents, not just specific groups. Porter emphasized that Jericho Village offers more than just affordable apartments; the included services aim to provide generational uplift rather than a temporary solution.
During the event, a congressional recognition from U.S. Representative Keith Self was presented. The inscription commended Collinsworth, Agape Resources staff, and community partners for their efforts. The recognition described the village as an example of compassion in action, noting that the opportunities created there would strengthen families and foster independence.
