Head Coach Neal Brown has raised serious concerns about the offensive line of the North Texas Mean Green as preparations for the 2026 season continue. After a recent practice, Brown remarked on the unit's current state, indicating that it is far from meeting the team's needs. He pointed out issues with the run game and inadequate pad level.
The offensive line was pivotal in North Texas' successful 2025 season, contributing to a national-leading total of 49 rushing touchdowns and earning recognition as the top-scoring offense. Key players included offensive guard Gabe Blair, who received First Team All-American Conference honors and was rated as the third-best guard by Pro Football Focus.
With the loss of all five starting offensive linemen from last season, the team faces the challenge of rebuilding. Brown mentioned that only two players, senior Johnny Williams IV and fifth-year Chandler Strong, have shown potential during fall camp, with Strong being highlighted as a standout.
He stressed the importance of establishing the right mix of players, noting that the team cannot compete effectively with just two offensive linemen. All positions on the line are open for competition as the coaching staff aims to create a dominant unit before the first game on September 5.
The onus is on Brown, offensive line coach Matt Mattox, and run game coordinator Mike Bloesch to enhance the offensive line's performance as the season nears. Brown cautioned that if the line continues to perform as it has, the team will face significant challenges.
