The Dallas Cowboys triumphed over the Seattle Seahawks with a score of 17-7 in their initial preseason matchup, but the victory was marred by an injury to running back Phil Mafah. During the game, Mafah sustained a chest injury and was initially deemed questionable to return, but he was subsequently ruled out.
Fortunately, early assessments indicate that Mafah's injury may not be severe. He currently ranks third on the Cowboys' depth chart, behind Javonte Williams and Jaydon Blue. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer provided an update, mentioning that he spoke with Mafah and expressed optimism about the situation, noting some minor injuries but overall a positive outlook.
Safety Justin Barron also faced a hit during the game, and Schottenheimer indicated that the team would evaluate all injured players upon their return to Oxnard for treatment.
Mafah, selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, is competing for a position on the final roster after a difficult rookie year, during which he participated in only one game, where he had five carries totaling 18 yards and scored a touchdown. In contrast, veteran Malik Davis impressed with seven carries for 39 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry.
As the Cowboys approach roster decisions, player health, especially Mafah's, remains a priority.
