The SMU Mustangs are enhancing their wide receiver lineup with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This move comes after the team lost its top two receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who together contributed over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with key offensive players, including tight ends Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland, and running backs TJ Harden and Chris Johnson Jr. Despite these setbacks, Hale and Smith have shown promise in fall camp.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins highlighted Smith's ability to make contested catches and praised Hale's speed and agility.
Hale, a former five-star recruit, is bouncing back from a severe knee injury that kept him sidelined for the entire 2024 season but has regained his explosive playmaking ability at SMU. Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness, which he believes will enhance the Mustangs' offensive strategy.
Smith brings over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from East Carolina, known for his aggressive playing style.
