The Department of War announced Monday that the U.S. Navy has awarded Raytheon, a business unit of RTX, a $22.9 billion contract to ramp up production of Tomahawk missiles. The agreement is designed to increase manufacturing output, strengthen supply chains, and speed deliveries of the long-range cruise missile to military forces.
The Pentagon stated that the massive award provides RTX with the stability needed to expand its workforce and meet growing demands. Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael Duffey noted in a statement that RTX answered the department's call to expand munitions production, which he said increases the ability to equip the Joint Force.
Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao described the investment as landmark, stating it will accelerate missile delivery at unprecedented speed. He emphasized that guaranteeing naval and joint forces have sufficient lethal firepower is paramount for deterring aggression and protecting the homeland. The department aims to utilize every available tool to ensure troops are equipped to fight and return safely.
This contract supports the Department of War’s Acquisition Transformation Strategy, which focuses on reducing procurement lead times and accelerating weapons deliveries. Pentagon officials have increasingly prioritized expanding the U.S. defense industrial base and shortening production times for key weapons as military operations and heightened global tensions highlight the need for resilient stockpiles.
The Tomahawk serves as one of the primary long-range strike weapons for the U.S. military, capable of launching from Navy ships and submarines against targets hundreds of miles away. The Navy’s Portfolio Acquisition Executive Munitions oversees the procurement and delivery of these capabilities, coordinating with the industrial base to expand production capacity.
