Late Rally Seals Victory
The Houston Astros overcame a tied game and a scoreless stretch from their bullpen to secure a 6-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. The deciding moments came in the bottom of the 10th inning when Jeremy Peña delivered a go-ahead single followed by Isaac Paredes driving in two runs with a double.
Houston took an early lead in the first inning when Jose Altuve hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Yordan Alvarez to score. The Giants answered in the fourth inning on another sacrifice fly, this one by Matt Chapman, which brought Austin Slater across to tie the game at 1-1.
The offense woke up in the middle frames. In the fifth, Kyle Tucker launched a home run to right field, putting Houston ahead 2-1. San Francisco regained the lead in the seventh when LaMonte Wade Jr. homered to left center. However, the Astros immediately responded with a home run of their own from Alex Bregman to left field, tying the contest at 2-2.
In the top of the ninth, the Giants broke the tie for good. Matt Chapman singled to right field, and LaMonte Wade Jr. scored on the play after stretching into second base, making it 3-2 San Francisco.
Pitching Performances
Hayden Wesneski started for Houston, pitching seven innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out four batters. He received support from Steven Okert, who pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout, and Josh Hader, who closed out the game with two perfect innings of relief, striking out two hitters. Hader was credited with the win, improving his record to 4-1.
