BJ Edwards, a guard who previously played for the SMU Mustangs, has decided to join the Oklahoma Sooners. The announcement was made by Joe Tipton of On3. Edwards is set to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility granted to the 2022 recruiting class due to a five-for-five temporary injunction.
After beginning his college career at the University of Tennessee, where he played just 14 games, Edwards transferred to SMU through the NCAA transfer portal. During his three seasons in Dallas, he played under two different head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield. Edwards had his best season last year, participating in 28 games while battling injuries.
He averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, and his defensive skills earned him All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC, with averages of 2.4 steals per game in the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals per game in the 2025-2026 season.
Although SMU showed interest in keeping him, Edwards opted to play for head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are aiming to strengthen their roster after finishing the last season with a record of 21 wins and 16 losses, including 7 wins and 11 losses in SEC play.
The addition of Edwards is seen as a key enhancement for the team's competitiveness in the upcoming winter season.
